Preventing No-Quotes: Tips for Success when Submitting Metal Fabrication Quotes

When sourcing parts from a sheet metal shop, the last thing you want when submitting metal fabrication quotes is to receive a no-quote from your fabricator.

At Metal Fabrication Professionals, we aim to quote each project that comes our way, but there are certain scenarios that put us at a standstill, often stemming from challenges that are entirely avoidable.

To keep your project moving forward smoothly, we’ve compiled some advice on how to sidestep these roadblocks through clear communication, thorough preparation, and an openness to potential workarounds.

Understanding Common No-Quote Scenarios

Forming Limitations

One of the most common challenges in sheet metal forming is creating parts that are taller than they are wide. Our CNC press brake sometimes encounters clearance issues when forming such components, as the part may interfere with the machine itself.

Solution: Adjusting the design slightly, even by a sixteenth or quarter of an inch, can make a world of difference. If your design allows for flexibility within tolerances, share this upfront when submitting metal fabrication quotes to avoid potential roadblocks. Prototypes, in particular, often benefit from these adjustments, allowing for smoother production without compromising functionality.

Quantity Considerations

When projects involve rare services, the cost of outsourcing this capability or procuring new tooling can be prohibitive when dealing with small quantities. For instance, we no-quoted a recent request-for-quote that included a unique tubing requirement for a single quantity order alongside standard cut-and-drilled parts. While we could handle the standard parts, the tubing resulted in a no-quote due to the combination of complexity and low volume.

Solution: Be mindful of your fabricator’s in-house capabilities and plan your order quantities accordingly. For specialty parts, for instance, consider larger runs to make outsourcing cost-effective

Specialized Forming and Tooling Challenges

Certain forming operations, like hemming (folding material over itself), require specialized dies or multiple steps. While we can handle some complex forming, projects that require rare or unique tooling may be better suited to a vendor with an established setup for these processes.

Solution: If your part requires specialized tooling, let your fabricator know upfront. In many cases, we can work with you to source the necessary tools.

Unclear RFQs

When it comes to requesting metal fabrication quotes, the more details you can provide, the better. A vague RFQ often leads to back-and-forth communication, delaying the quoting process at best and resulting in a no-quote at worst.

Solution: Be sure to include all of the following key details in your RFQs:

  • Clear dimensions and tolerances
  • Material specifications (and backup options when possible)
  • Required finishes or special treatments
  • Assembly instructions, if applicable

One common example of a roadblock that delays the quoting process is when customers do not specify whether or not tabbing or grinding is permissible for their small, laser-cut parts. Tabs prevent small pieces like washers from falling through the laser table, but they do come with additional finishing steps. Clarifying these preferences can prevent unnecessary no-quotes.
